Abnormal Bleeding Q & A

What are menstrual disorders?

Menstrual disorders are conditions that affect your normal menstrual cycle.

Types of menstrual disorders include:

Abnormal uterine bleeding

With abnormal uterine bleeding, you may experience heavy bleeding, a period that lasts longer than eight days, or bleeding in-between your period.

Amenorrhea

If you miss three or more menstrual periods in a row, you have amenorrhea, or absence of menstruation.

Dysmenorrhea

Dysmenorrhea is the medical term for painful menstruation.

Oligomenorrhea

If your periods are light, you have oligomenorrhea.

Premenstrual syndrome (PMS)

PMS refers to the physical or emotional discomfort you feel a few days before your period.

Premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD)

Though similar to PMS, women with PMDD experience more severe physical and emotional symptoms before they start their period.

What causes abnormal bleeding?

You may develop a menstrual disorder or abnormal bleeding from any number of causes. Some of the most common include:

  • Uterine fibroids
  • Endometriosis
  • Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)
  • Hormonal changes
  • Genetics
  • Sexually transmitted disease (STD)

How is abnormal bleeding diagnosed?

When you visit Zeid Pelvic Health Center for a menstrual disorder like abnormal bleeding, your provider uses state-of-the-art technology to find the root cause of your symptoms, so you get the right treatment.

During your evaluation, your provider reviews your symptoms, gynecological and medical history, and the types of medications and supplements you take. They conduct a physical and pelvic exam and then run diagnostic tests to confirm or rule out a diagnosis.

Testing may include blood work, urinalysis, STD testing, ultrasound, or MRI. In some cases, your provider at Zeid Pelvic Health Center may suggest a diagnostic laparoscopic procedure to determine the root cause of your menstrual disorder.

How are menstrual disorders treated?

Treatment for your menstrual disorder or abnormal uterine bleeding may depend on the type, cause, and your personal preferences. The women’s health specialists at Zeid Pelvic Health Center work closely with you to develop a plan that fits your needs.

Treatment may include:

  • Diet modification
  • Over-the-counter pain relievers
  • Hormonal birth control
